Late License Records have dominated Southampton’s drum & bass scene for years, and their experience in promoting drum and bass events really shows in comparison to other events on the south coast. Truly in a league of their own, and keeping the old school rave atmosphere alive, they continue to provide the true ravers of Southampton the regular dose of bass.
With a 35k sound system, and four of the biggest names in drum & bass, this was set to be the biggest party of 2009 so far. It didn’t disappoint.
As the vibes built, drum & bass legends Nicol and Majistrate stepped up to the decks. Beginning with an exciting intro with a very summer feel, as the first track dropped the low frequencies flooded the dance-floor with huge impact. The crowd were up for this. Showcasing a very new selection of jump up, Nicol and Majistrate tore the place to pieces, before the double drop king took over the DJ booth. As the worlds number one MC Skibadee made the stage his own, together they took this very music appreciating audience on a journey into drum & bass history. The usual Mampi Swift anthems were included. Although it was a rather predictable set, the quick mixing, and double drops kept the crowd on their toes.
For the last hour, Southampton’s very own up-and-coming DJ’s Klip and Uno provided wall-to-wall upfront madness. As the dance-floor turned into a battlefield, with ravers fighting for space to dance, the vibe didn’t turn violent, and the local DJ’s left the crowd wanting more, as the night came to an end.
Tune of the night: Mampi Swift – One Finger (taken from the brand new album ‘I Am Legend’). (Out now on ‘Charge Recordings’).
