Review by Kayleigh Bell
3000 students gathered to Solent’s SU car park on May’s first bank holiday for some hardcore afternoon raving time as WHAMMED kicked off its best party of the year! Bang Bang played host to the last student party before the summer as herds of Ibiza Ravers and Glastonbury Rockers flocked to Southampton’s best bars for a mix of dance vs. urban and indie like a swarm of rock ‘n’ raving locusts! Vodka Revs, 90 Degrees, Mono, Orange, Buddha, Rhino and Junk were all packed out with a mixed crowd made up of wild indie kids, hardcore ravers, Glastonbury rockers and cool electro kids for an unforgettable night that lasted till 4am and of course only the hardcore ravers would last this long!!! The SU open its doors to create the perfect setting stage for the festival fun with drum and bass legends Chase and Status and Radio 1’s electro duo Jaymo and Andy George smashing up the main stage with two unforgettable DJ sets! The sound system created the perfect festival feel for the party of the year with Chase and Status tearing it up on the decks with a mix of pure dirty dubstep and top drum and bass beats! There was a slight queue to get into the caged off main stage arena although it moved quite quickly with groups of people heading to the packed bar and overcrowded toilets!! Bang Bang definitely created the festival feel with three porta loos at the back of the car park and two tents playing a mix of urban vs. dance to a packed out student union! Come 8.00pm and Chase and Status’s ‘Pieces’ got the crowd going as everyone started singing the lyrics, ‘you don’t care about me….anymore!!!’ The tune finished off an outstanding set as a guy wearing a horse mask and a group of girls busting out the wellies bounded around at the front of the stage before heading to Bedford Place.
Later on into the night the bar quarter of Southampton definitely had it going on as the neon wearing Ravers and guitar loving Rockers congregated along the high street for a night of drinking, dancing and raving! Orange Rooms and the Buddha Lounge were packed out with both bars having queues of WHAMMED students outside whilst Mono had electro loving groups partying to tunes such as Justice’s ‘Dance,’ TC’s ’ Where’s my Money’ and Daft Punk! A group of body popping, robot grooving guys with legendary neon sunglasses took over the dance floor whilst two girls repping the neon face paint danced up on the higher level near the DJ booth. The place to be at the end of the night was Junk which opened its doors till 4am. With a 20 minute queue outside it was definitely the place to dance to some deep techy trance, party electro, fidget house and dazzling disco beats for any extravagant clubber! A variety of Junk’s legendary disco balls dangled from the ceiling splintering the colourful lighting and illuminating the dark, busy dance floor as the Ravers and Rockers raved it up to a brilliant set of drum and bass, techno, trance, electro, dubstep and pure house classics. Dubstep definitely ruled the night with La Roux’s ‘In for the Kill’ and Dizzee Rascal’s ‘Bonkers’ remix taking over as the anthems of the night. As usual Junk’s dance floor was packed out with sweaty ravers whilst a group of cool club kids surrounded the DJ booth with numerous whistles and the odd horn pumping through the club! Resident DJ’s Mr Noisy and BITR8 had people skanking in the front row to the classic dirty beats dominating the dance music scene today. First of all the DJ’s created a storm with electro taking over the dance floor followed by dirty dubstep, hectic drum and bass and the night finishing on some proper trance classics! Tunes such as Mistabishi’s ‘Printer Jam,’ M.I.A’s ‘Paper Planes,’ top Pendulum classics, Kanye West remixes and pure dubstep remixes from Skream and Chase and Status had everyone in the club bopping their heads, shaking their bodies and throwing their hands in the air like true rampant ravers!!! One things for sure the Ibiza Ravers took over the club with only a few Glastonbury Rockers popping up on the dance floor every now and then.
By the wee small hours of the morning the outer walls were propping up the shiny-faced and raved-out punters whilst a token of handful die hard ravers still crowded around the DJ booth! One things for sure The Whammed! Summer Sound system created a rocking and raving night of an all day outdoor fancy dress festival topped off with Southampton’s best student bars finishing off the night! If your reading this and didn’t go….you missed out!!
