Xample & Lomax @ The Soul Cellar – 08-05-09
Well where do I start? The night was awesome:
The supporting DJ’s played good sets from what I managed to catch. Although there was not much of a crowd at the start of the night, the DJ’s managed to generate quite a good little atmosphere within the venue. As the night progressed more and more ravers were turning up to see Xample & Lomax and within a couple of hours of being there the venue was buzzing with an electric atmosphere and the anticipation for the arrival for these 2 top DJ’s was getting intense.
With Xample stepping up to the wheels of steel I was apprehensive as to what he was going to pull out of the bag after seeing his set @ Matter for the opening Ram he had a lot to live up to. To my amazement he did not fail to deliver in a small venue to a small crowd. Xample was dropping heavy hitting tracks left right and centre throughout his whole track, his skills as a DJ are really impressive and I did not hear 1 mix that went wrong or slightly out of time. An all round good performance from one of Rams very own DJ’s.
This was the first time I had seen Lomax so I didn’t know what to expect. Before coming to the night I had asked a few people what they thought about him and all I got back was positive comments, so I was looking forward to his set a bit more. Lomax started his playing some of his low down deep liquid drum and bass and slowly progressed into what I was waiting for. That being dark and grimy drum and bass that he produces and mixes so well. The highlight of his set for me was when he dropped one of his own productions, ‘Avon Calling’. He also played his VIP mix of ‘Artisan’ which the crowd went absolutely mental for. After all the waiting to see Lomax I am happy to say that I would definitely pay money to see him perform again. It would be interesting to see him perform to a different crowd at a festival to see how many people he would win over in a 60 min set.
The Venue itself is generally a good venue for drum and bass and a home for dnb in Southampton, this night was no different. With a pretty impressive lighting rig fitted with lasers made it feel as though you were in a proper old school style rave which really added to feel of the night. A happy vibe was maintained in the club throughout the night and it was a pleasure to be there watching these two DJ’s bringing the end of my crazy week to a close. Big thumbs up for the both of them for playing astounding sets.
