Dillinja and Lemonde’s world famous Drum & Bass sound system returned to London, in the O2 Arena for the first time. It was a hugely anticipated event, and well over two-thousand drum & bass fans had come from all over the country to experience the loudest Drum & Bass sound system in the world! With volume levels peaking at over 130dB it was certainly an experience.
On entry, the first thing I noticed was the clarity of the sound. The microphone sounded crisp, and as the hi-hats were crunching through, the sub bass seemed to vibrate through my legs, while the kick was pumping through my chest. The dance-floor sucked me in.
With dubstep dons N-Type and Hatcha warming up the bass-bins with Crazy D hosting, the crowd was growing ridiculously fast. Hundreds lined-up outside the entrance of the O2 Arena shaking in excitement.
As Dynamite introduced the duo behind it all, Dillinja and Lemonde (previously known as Lemon D), the crowd erupted. A set full of thumping kicks and sub low bass tones was just the start of things…
Friction was up next, and the sound system seemed to be turned up a notch. As his first track dropped the Earth-trembling bass vibrated the whole club. The dance-floor was a sea of low frequencies. Starting off quite dark, Friction quickly built his set, moving on to some jump-up style Drum & Bass. The energy in the set was amazing, and SP:MC created a lively vibe. Friction ended his set with High Contrast’s remix of ‘In For The Kill’, double dropping it with the DJ Fresh anthem ‘Signal’. A rewind was the only outcome.
Digital Soundboy (Shy FX) then played what was personally my favourite set of the night. After beginning his set with some nice rolling D&B, he broke up the night nicely with a popular selection of dubstep. Eventually returning to drum & bass, he and legendary MC Skibadee raised the atmosphere further. Shy FX rolled out some big bad and heavy jump-up, and even went on a little crusade into Drum & Bass history with some old skool classics, including Roni Size’s ‘Trust Me’, and Leviticus’ jungle classic ‘Burial’. Skibba layed down his famous bars, as the crowd chanted them back at him. The highlight of the set for me was TopCat’s ‘Everyday’ produced by Shy FX himself. The Valve Sound System, influenced by old skool reggae sound systems, really added emphasis on the reggae style bass line.
IC3 hosted a birthday set from Drum & Bass legend DJ Hype. The usual Playaz style D&B shook the club, and the dance-floor became even more hectic, though with space to actually dance, which you rarely enjoy these days, the vibe was kept under control. The track for me was Sub Focus - Rock It. The Kiss 100 DJ was up to his usual antics, double dropping and scratching his way through the best Hype set that I’ve heard in a while.
As Foxy and Shabba joined the stage, so too did Bristolians Die and Clipz. A set heavily influenced by their own production styles, and those of musically related artists, kept the vibe alive on the dance-floor. While there was daylight outside, the 2000+ capacity venue was still full. No-one was going home just yet.
With an hour left, Metalheadz owner, Goldie, played the last set. Rolling out his infamous dark, rolling style drum & bass, he kept a majority of the crowd on the dance-floor, while some had simply run out of energy. MC Rage lyrically entertained those who still had the stamina to continue.
Tune of the night: Spor – Aztec (Out now on Shogun Audio)
Venue: 5/5
Sound system: 6/5!!!
Music: 5/5
Atmosphere: 4/5
