Rhino played host to the godfather of dubstep and a DnB legend this bank holiday weekend as Skream and Ed Rush took over the top floor of one of Southampton’s leading nightclubs. As we arrived at the club at midnight I was expecting to see a queue outside, however saying this the smoking area was fairly crowded and the dance floor was to say the least absolutely crammed as true dubstep lovers crowded around the DJ booth to catch a glimpse of their favourite dubstep DJ who had just started his 2 hour set on the decks. The ambassador of dubstep has been making music since his early teens and in recent years this endlessly proliferating sub-genre has been making a huge mark in dance music gracing our clubs and bars more often than none. Dubstep is now even bigger and more recognised throughout the country with huge DJ’s such as Skream himself, Caspa, Rusko, Benga and Joker dominating the scene and taking over most of the summer festivals this year!

The great thing about Skream is how he steps up to the DJ decks effortlessly mixing and influentially dropping his tunes to a crowd of true dubstep lovers. The crowd consisted mainly of young men, which isn’t unusual as dubstep is dominated by men, however there were a great deal of girls in the club who mostly got involved during Ed Rush’s set! Throughout Skream’s set though, I did notice small groups of people who were obviously not use to dubstep standing on the sidelines taking in the atmosphere but its great to see more and more people enjoying the genre and he managed to keep the majority of the club dancing to his mellow dubstep, which in my opinion could have been a bit more grittier! For the first hour of Skream’s set he seemed to please the crowd as most people looked as though they were enjoying themselves skanking amongst each other on the sweaty dance floor to his latest dubstep tunes. Saying this however, in the smoking area a lot of people were slating his set and most people I spoke to wanted to hear his remix of La Roux’s ‘In For the Kill’ which unfortunately he didn’t play, but true Skream fans would have appreciated his set as that’s what they were there for and the dance floor was packed out! Coming to the end of his set and all round Skream produced a good atmosphere. I personally prefer grittier, grimier dubstep myself, however the crowd seemed pleased as Skream played even more mellow dubstep to finish off. I think once Ed Rush stepped up to the decks though the dance floor tore apart as more and more people started to dance!

Ed Rush stepped up dropping gritty drum and bass which a lot of people seemed to like and with a MC at the front chanting his name the crowd got even more hyped up whooping and cheering along to the heavy bass! The club had brilliant green strobe lights fading in and out throughout the dance floor and for those who did get hot in the sweaty atmosphere amongst the dance floor could make their way to the front where two huge fans were in place! Downstairs was a bit disappointing with MC’s chanting over the top of dubstep, not my thing to be honest and I think the club could have done better to maybe play alternative music downstairs! Nevertheless the highlight my night was Ed Rush as I personally prefer music with a heavier bass, although both DJ’s pulled in the crowds as the dance floor and the upstairs bar seemed to be packed out all night. All round Rhino created a top night at one of Southampton’s primary clubs, although this was the last place I expected to see Skream as I don’t really hear much about Rhino bringing in big DJ‘s! However all round a good night!
