DJ’s:
Friction
Hazard
Darren Jay
Bryan Gee
Klip

MC’s:
Fearless
GQ
Shabba
Bensta

One of the most attractive Drum & Bass line-ups Southampton has seen for a while, appearing at the City’s super-club ‘Oceana’, this was set to be a massive night. The only thing letting it down was the lack of promotion around Southampton.

The 1000+ capacity ‘Icehouse’ was barely half filled, though managed to maintain a very lively atmosphere all night. With big sets from Klip and Darren Jay, Bensta did what he does best, getting the crowd on the dancefloor, dancing!

Hazard showcased all the tracks you could expect to hear in his set. ‘Wicked So’ and ‘Mr Happy’ were just two of the tracks that caused a stir. Keeping the style energetic, as Hazard has managed to do for over a decade, together he and Shabba proved that a Drum & Bass event doesn’t have to be rammed to be enjoyable.

As Friction opened his set the crowd were ready for more audio destruction. An anthemic set from the Shogun Audio front-man kept the vibe alive. MC GQ hosted, whilst fighting off the women, who were constantly bombarding him. It was when Sub Focus’ ‘Rock It’ was dropped that the atmosphere really took off.

Bryan Gee played out the last two hours with a (more heavy than usual) jump-up selection. After some technical difficulties Fearless finally got to do his, whilst the knowledgeable ravers excitedly resounded his lyrics in unison.

Although Icehouse boasts a loud, bass-driven sound system, it wasn’t put into effect. For most of the night, the mic was over-powering the music too much, and sound clarity was lost. However, the bass was definitely rumbling.

Tune of the night: Sub Focus – Rock It! (Released Monday 27th July on Ram Records)

Venue: 5/5
Sound system: 3/5
Music: 4/5
Atmosphere: 3/5
