DNB ARENA ON
LTJ BUKEM : FABRIC LIVE 46

WAX is the new weekly drum and bass / dubstep night in Southampton. With a home at the Rhino club on Wednesdays and some Sundays this night has a high attendance of students, however tonight was no exception, but the mix of students to locals was very healthy.

This was a night which brought the local scene together and smaller communities within. By 11.30 Rhino was packed to capacity and by serving cheap drink promotions the crowd were soon well oiled and ready for a night of quality beats.

Tonight saw pioneer of the drum and bass world ‘LTJ Bukem’ step up to the decks and delight the crowd with his selection of new up and coming talent from Good Looking Records. A name that would more appeal to the heads than the students in general but this did not affect the numbers on the door. By prime time the club was filled to capacity with a friendly vibe and a crowd so warm that only the best support act could make possible. DJ Gerra and MC Visionobi were support for the night, local artists who are residents are pretty much all dnb nights in the city. The night followed the grooves of Bukem and the drinks flowed. There was no trouble at all as far as we could see, which shows that with a good selection of people and drink fuelled nights, rather than your chemical alternatives, can still pack a punch without the almost stereotyped “trouble”.

In our eyes Southampton has needed a budget dnb night for some time but this was always going to be an issue pulling in the big names whilst trying to cater for the student crowd. Now that this type of night has launched and become a success it has completely blown us away. God knows how the Wax crew do this but by the looks of things Wax aren’t afraid to shell out some big bucks for huge names. There is obviously a huge deal of love involved with these nights because clubs of the same capacity are not seen doing this type of promoting, not monthly and especially not weekly! You can’t go without saying that the students in this town really are being treated well. Maybe this is because of the dedicated promoters that drum and bass brings or maybe it’s just dnb as the genre having a much larger effect on the student crowd. So much so that clubs and promoters see it as a high profile selling brand now. Or both.

We will be sure to be down at Rhino for the rest of the Wax nights and hope that you will be as well. That is if you can get a ticket because that’s how business is looking for these nights!
