‘Wax’ presents: Benga @ Rhino (4/10/09)

Southampton’s brand new club night ‘Wax’ has hit the city a huge impact! The second night in just a few days, and again near enough reaching the club’s capacity, as ravers from across the South coast headed to Rhino to hear dubstep legend Benga.

With a reasonable sound system, and an exciting laser show, the venue was set for another amazing event. Impressed with the previous ‘Wax’ night featuring LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad, I was looking forward to this one with much anticipation.

I arrived in time to catch an energetic dubstep set from DJ Gerra. With MC Visionobi hosting, the atmosphere grew with each track that dropped. A set full of tearing basslines and heavy snares, and a very “UK Garage” feel to it, showing the genre’s roots, as the crowd cried out for reloads almost as soon as each bassline penetrated the sub-woofers.

The stage was set for Croydon’s finest, DJ Benga. Possibly the most important producer in Dubstep, stepped up to perform a set showcasing everything good about the London-born genre. Playing many of his own productions, such as ‘Night’, alongside anthems such as ‘In For The Kill, and Emalkay’s ‘When I Look At You’, he almost created a mosh-pit on the dance floor. Making the most of the DJM-800’s effects, he kept the mixing side of things entertaining, dropping each track with maximum impact. MC Alpha complimented the set with excellent hosting skills.

Tune of the night: Noah D – Serious (Out now on Subway Records)
