As we all know Southampton is full of students, we also all know that certain DJs appeal to students like; Chase’n’Status, Sub Focus and yes, High Contrast. It seems the bigger a DJ is in the commercial world, the more aware they become of the audiences they might attract.
High Contrast wasn’t amazing. For a man who won ‘Best Liquid DJ’ at this year’s 1Xtra’s Drum and Bass awards he could have provided us with something different to the normal standard. He played a predictable mix of tunes including he’s remixes of ‘Gold Digger’ and ‘Ready for the weekend’. Half the crowd were loving it, some looked like they didn’t have a clue why they were there. The rest mingled around the edges, bubbling away and occasionally shocking out at the drop of a banger like TC’s remix of Sidney Samson’s ‘Riverside’.
I looked around at the mingling faces, they were all regulars, and although most of them weren’t really concentrating on High Contrast’s clichéd set, they were all there showing support for the Southampton DnB scene. There was a real sense of community there; a big shout out goes out to anyone who considers themselves a Southampton DnB/Dubstep regular. The cellar really was packed out as usual when HC comes to town but compared to his last visits he was lacking.
Gerra’s set proved that he can easily cut it with the best of them. His set was just as good as High Contrast’s and it definitely created more energy. Instead of playing what he thought people wanted to hear, Gerra read the crowd beautifully gradually taking them to the darker corners of the spectrum and instead leading the way with a selection of new promos.
The night came to a close and everyone left happy as usual at any Raygun night, this is due to the community their nights brings. Im sure next time Mr Contrast may just decide to up his game a little, he didn't disappoint but he was not on his usual form thats for sure...
