The night was dark, the night was cold the night was frosty, the night was Friday 22nd January 2010, the night was the battle of the promoters. On the same date, two different promoters held massive drum and bass events in the same, relatively small town. There were talks among the local drum and bass followers regarding who would attract the most people and whether DnB was big enough in Southampton dominate two events. Would both succeed?
But worries were extinguished at the sight of two enormous queues at both clubs. With Enter focusing on Jump and Hospitality catering for the student dance-floor vibe, the nights were entertaining two very different clienteles and both achieved massive success. Friday 22nd January 2010 was a true triumph for the Southampton DnB scene.
Enter is such a good night, with a totally professional gleam, every time these guys come to town it’s a rock block. Staring was Klip with his individual style, mixing the dark and dirty with the dance floor he effortlessly warmed up the ravers and prepared them for the headliners.
Hazard played the bangers, but it was clear from his morbid expression and complete lack of attempt to make any eye contact with the crowd that his heart wasn’t in it, but it really didn’t need to be with a set that fresh. True to form Hazard played all the biggest tunes of the moment from his home camp Playaz including ‘Return of the Drunken Fool’ amongst tunes so shiny and brand spanking new that the vinyl’s still warm from pressing.
Hailing from the home of Jump Up and nurtured by the likes of Clipz and DJ Die it’s not wonder Interface knows what he’s doing. Not only is he responsible for producing some of the years biggest tunes (including a personal favourite of mine Get Low” Interface is also an absolutely amazing DJ. He’s set wasn’t as new as Hazard’s but Interface’s choice of new school classic’s by no means predictable or outdated. He’s mixing ability is absolutely amazing and there was an over whelming sense that while working he’s little fingers off to achieve perfectly timed drops and cuts, Interface was also to give the crowed exactly what they wanted.
Original Sin’s ‘R Bass’ was the tune of the night, it’s metallic, echoing sub resonated around the room at least three time’s, sending the crowd into hyper drive every time it was dropped.
So well done yet again to the Enter family for bringing Southampton another night of the freshest Jump Up, interesting DJs and most importantly a good old rave up. Here’s to many more!
