Less than a few hours after our arrival in Austria we had dumped our
bags, picked up our gear and were on our way to Vienna’s most underground
and talked about nightclub in the city. We had already heard comments such as
'one of the best club sound systems in Europe' and 'flex leads the scene with its nights'
so one thing was clear we had to check this place out! A week before our trip we checked
program at flex and 'Beat it' nights put on by promoter and DJ 'Rawfull' are Flex's
weekly dnb nights. Unfortunately by one week we missed out on 'Beat it's' monthly label guest
party which for February was hosted by viper recordings. However tonight’s star was Camo
from duo producer and DJ act Camo & Krooked.
As we entered the venue we were greeted by 'Rawfull' himself who escorted us to the backroom
to hook up with Camo, drop off our gear and talk about the latest album offering from Camo &
Krooked 'Above & Beyond'. Camo with referring to the album now being finished for a while hes
looking forward to the reaction of the UK market and off to London tomorrow for a couple of weeks
of press, including radio interviews, photo shoots and print media representations. We gathered that
there’s much much more in the pipeline from these guys for 2010 however first things first and that means
putting the album out to the market through their Austrian based label 'Mainframe Recordings'.
Camo & Krooked may not be that well known to the dnb market in the UK as their dj sets have
been exclusive and they have not yet played at major events held at such name breaking clubs like
Fabric & Matter in the capital. On the release front though C&K have had releases through both UK based Viper and Hospital records.
Back to the club and after concluding on our chat with Camo we thought it was time to check out the
club itself. With two rooms with two huge bars each you were never quing long for a drink and prices
were very reasonable as well. A nice touch is if you take your empty glass/ bottle back to the bar
you get 1 euro back, this is to help with keeping the club tidy and safe. In the main room its drum
and bass all night and the second housed minimal house vibes for a more chilled out vibe with lots
of seating at the bar and around the room.
The lighting rig in the main room was impressive with an LED lighting board above the dance floor that
presented customized graphics for each artist and a light show to complement each sub genre.
Levels steadily progressed throughout the night to a huge wall of sound that really were ear blowing on
a quality spectrum. The system didn’t need to be cranked as the clarity mixed with a healthy level of bass was as clear as a spring in the Austrian mountains!
During our shoot the lights provided a very warm and sweaty atmosphere for myself and the very
attractive young locals, that by the time Camo had taken to the stage they had also joined him in
the limelight. What we noticed the most was the vibes inside the club of which were soo relaxed and
genuinely happy with smiles from every face. Every drop provided arms in the air and Camos style of
quick mixing over no less than 3 CDJ decks showed his talent away from the studio.
We were so impressed with what he brought to the stage that comparisons of a fast mixing style like that of Friction and Andy C, some of the biggest players in the game were made! Talent really was exceptional and maybe Camo really is 'Austria's finest export'.
The Austrian attitude is very laid back and relaxed within the crowd. If you compare this to most nights in the UK where you often get various aggressive characters and non sociable groups it shows a complete contrast of social behaviors. Smiles were shining all over the club, the bass was rolling out and the temperature was starting to sore. A perfect night out for any dnb head thats wanting a truly European vibe with a regular night that knows how to cater for their customers.
