High Contrast @ The Soul Cellar, Southampton, UK

Thursday 23rd October 2008

Further along the south coast the biggest names in dnb are dropping in and completing the student circuit. This week its High Contrast and its something a little bit special. A little bit fresh and off the fucking hook! The event was hosted by “Raygun Youth” known in the south for being the promoters for bringing the best dnb djs around at an affordable price. £8 advance is a snip at what it would cost you at a night in fabric when uve forgotten your nus!

The venue filled up early as students from both universities wanted to get top spot at the front of the venue. Even Southampton uni students who were a good few miles from their part of the city came down abandoning their own event “Nicky Blackmarket & MC Eksman” at the Cube. The support djs warmed up the crowd with some of the finest underground dnb that £8 has to offer, some hits were dropped in to show that they were catering for the headline act, something more mainstream in the sub culture. 20 minutes before the arrival of HC the crowd were already chanting his name helped along with the support MC.

At 12.38 High Contrast made an entrance on stage lugging his bag of vinyl to cheers of screaming girls and rowdy raucous lads. The first track that was laid down set an atmosphere, sent a chill up most peoples spines and the temperature sore +10 of which it was already 30 in venue. This first track was High Contrasts remix hometown glory. Just one of the many tracks the punters had come to see, hear and dance their sweaty fucking asses off to. On stage it was smoked out and with photographers cameras slipping out their fingers even dj HC was fanning him self with the latest to come from the press at Hospital and Ram.

15 mins into HC’s set fans were going wild, jumping up onto the sides of the venue and even trying to climb onto the stage. Much to the crowds disappointment security were at hand to shift off the feisty customers. Something that impressed me was the laid back and chilled out mix of people that attended. You didn’t have the aggression and behavement disorders that you have at most dnb nights in the capital and all over the country. There was no pre paranoia with the whole room having to drop and come up on their dose. There was no everlasting potent smell of the strongest industrial skunk man has ever smelt, lingering in the entrance to the club. There was no shirts being ripped or hair being grabbed. This was High Contrast. This is a student town and this is the new benchmark set for other promoters and artists to aim for.

With Chase and Status, shy fx and many more big dnb names coming to Southampton in the next couple of weeks it will be interesting to see what they bring and how they deliver it. One things for sure we wont be forgetting this night for a while.
